

BRIEF HISTORY
Plovdiv, situated on the both sides of Maritza river, is the second by size city in Bulgaria. Its unique location on this ancient crossroad contributed to the strong political and cultural influence from the east and west civilizations, nevertheless the city keeps its identity. It is older than the oldest cities in the world, like Rome, Athens, Cartagena or Constantinople, contemporary with ancient Troy. Plovdiv is a town built over the ruins of many prior towns, and culture developed from the legacy of many ancient ones.
During the last years in Plovdiv is observed realization of significant development of big business and trade centers, urbanization of the Main walking street, and reconstruction of the infrastructure. Every year in Plovdiv are implemented international events – International Fair of Plovdiv, The nights of Verdi, The night of the galleries and museums, International Folk festival, Autumn jazz-fest, etc. The city is advancing like unique combination of the ancient and modern European vision.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
During the past five years the municipality of Plovdiv claimed to be the biggest economic zone in Bulgaria. According the data from the local Trade Chamber more than 24 000 companies are working in the region. Each year brings the incensement of the share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that Plovdiv provides for Bulgaria. Annual grow of the local GDP is 12-13%. The income from all the economic areas for 2005 exceeded 4.7 billion euro, which is 88% more than year 2001. The general amount of the profit has increased 4.5 times. The level of unemployment is about 7.2%, much below the average for the country. Municipality budget for 2008 is over 100 million euro. The population of Plovdiv is about 340 000 people.
